Survey of Hedge Fund Principals in September 2007 showed that they considered recession in 2008 very likely. Even then, they have an inkling of what is to happen, but chose to gamble just the same. Over 61% of the respondents believed a recession is “very likely”. Nearly 90% of the hedge fund principals interviewed predicted that market volatility will continue or increase through the rest of 2007.

Over 200 hedge fund principals were surveyed, all having a minimum of 0 million in assets being managed, and being in operation for at least 5 years. Surprisingly, only 17% thought a recession would have a negative effect on their funds. Nearly 67% said that a recession would really provide opportunities for investment. As the Managing Principal of Rothstein- Kass, Howar Altman, pointed out- the ability of hedge funds principals to outperform in turbulent markets is the reason for this confidence. Fewer than 15% plotted to make changes to their funds’ underlying investment strategy.

The annual ranking of top hedge fund earners compiled by Alpha, a magazine that caters to wealthy and institutional investors, reports that the top money-maker, John Paulson, took home .7 billion last year, probably the richest single-year haul in Wall Street history. Paulson, the founder of Paulson & Company, was followed by George Soros, who took in .9 billion, and James H. Simons, who netted .8 billion. The top 50 hedge fund managers took in a combined sum of billion.

To place these astronomical figures in some perspective, the combined take of these 50 individuals is about the same as the annual yucky domestic product of Kenya, a country of 32.5 million people, and a billion dollars less than the GDP of Sri Lanka, the home of 20 million people.

US hedge fund world amassed their windfalls by betting correctly that the US housing market would collapse or speculating on the soaring price of basic commodities such as oil and foodstuffs. They benefited from the housing and credit crises that are driving millions in the US and other countries into foreclosure and threatening millions more with hunger or outright starvation.

Forbes magazine, which published its own survey of hedge fund and private equity CEOs, headlined its tale “Wall Street’s Top Earners: Your Pain, Their Gain.” The article starts: “Problems paying the mortgage, filling the gas tank and feeding the family have eroded living standards for millions of Americans during the past several months. Not so for people who manage huge piles of money: many of them made a fortune betting correctly on the housing debacle and rising commodity prices last year.”

Hedge funds and private equity funds are virtually unregulated companies that cater to wealthy investors, pension funds, university endowments and the like. Hedge funds promise their moneyed investors super-high returns from speculation in stocks, bonds, derivatives and commodities. The managers usually collect a fee of 2 percent on the total investment of their clients plus a 20 percent cut of any gains realized.

Gary Burtless, an economist at the Brookings Institution, said, “To some degree it’s a very gigantic version of Las Vegas.”

CEOs, who have presided over financial disasters and plummeting share prices, including those at major banks and investment houses, continue to award themselves multi-million-dollar salaries and bonuses, and even those who have been forced to resign or retire at companies like Citigroup and Merrill Lynch have gotten severance packages worth tens of millions of dollars. The concentration of wealth at the top and pervasive social inequality is greater in the US today than at any time since the Fantastic Depression. The key to operating any successful business is being able to predict the future, some companies get it right and grow their businesses exponentially such as Apple with the Iphone and some get it spectacularly incorrect such as Toshiba and HD DVD.

In the gambling industry the ease with which companies have for all eternity been able to predict that people will still gamble has been abused and has in the land based casino industry stifled innovative product development. MGM would have to act as both the casino and the educator when the final regulation and legalization does come along.

The other hurdle could well be in the small print of any legislation. The current position of many politicians is that any regulation would enable every bet placed by a U.S. Citizen to be taxed, they argue that it is not honest for an offshore company to take wagers without paying the relevant tax to the authorities. How does this equate to the holder of an American online gaming license taking wagers from other countries in the world? It would seem somewhat hypocritical for the U.S. Government not to object.

The next step may seem insignificant and obvious at the same time, choosing a Brand and domain name. It seems that MGM have reserved MGM Casino as the dot com domain as currently this shows the main MGM website. MGM Online is taken by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. This would have been the ideal domain and brand for MGM to go online but it is not to be.

The brand needs consideration as to whether the Online gaming client and the Las Vegas Visitor who uses the current website are the same people. The current MGM website is not ranked in the first 1000 results on google for the term casino. This will be a huge hill to climb and once that process has begun it cannot be stopped or everything is set back to zero again.

Lets say for arguments sake that new legislation requires it to be a stand alone business and have a separate site to the main and current hotel and casino website. We will assume that MGM use the domain MGM Casino.

The next step is to choose a provider for the online casino software. These companies have built the industry and it would be foolhardy to reckon MGM could simply build their own software and compete with the likes of Playtech or Microgaming. Again the new regulations could prove a problem here.

Everyone within the industry fully expects to see new regulations prohibit any company that has taken so called illegal wagers from America in the past from applying for a new U.S gaming license.

The question is will this apply to the software manufacturers? At first glance you would say no but remember that the software companies in the online gambling world work on a revenue share of sorts and a Casino sites fees are based on a percentage of its revenue, it could be argued that the makers of the software are just as entangled as the operators of the casino websites.

This again will need to be clarified by the authorities prior to any choice. The next three Super Bowls have been awarded to cities in Florida, Texas, and Indiana ensuring the NFL won’t abandon America any time soon – at least not for three years. Don’t count on anything after that. If the NFL and Roger Goodell can shake down London for enough money, you can rest assured it will be very enticing to go there.

That’s how awarding a host city the Super Bowl goes these days, sort of a high bid situation. Money talks. The NFL holds some cities for ransom while rewarding those who have built new stadiums and punishing those who refuse.
